The Checklist: Dealing with disappointment

Four ‘why’s” and their '“how’s”. Choose what suits you.

Here’s a summary from the video above.

How

Why

Acknowledge and Name Your Feelings

Identifying your emotions helps create distance from them, allowing you to respond rather than react.

Reframe the Situation

Viewing disappointment as a learning opportunity can turn setbacks into moments of growth and resilience.

Practice Self-Compassion

Treating yourself with kindness during disappointment reduces self-criticism and fosters emotional healing.

Set Realistic Expectations

Focusing on what you can control and grounding your expectations in reality minimizes the impact of unmet outcomes

Disappointment can be tough to overcome

but having a plan in place to find the value in the experience

can make all the difference to us.

The Pause Portal: Reflection on Outcomes

Ever been on a plane

where the passengers clap on landing?

They forget every bump or shake of the plane.

They are pleased to have arrived.

We too can dwell on details of the journey

and forget to celebrate the outcome.

Steady your breathing, noticing each breath.

Notice the River Avon

as it goes over a granite outcrop

near Shipley Bridge, Devon, UK.

The rhododendrons here overhang the river

and the water disperses over the rock.

Some water stays on the main course

flowing through a channel.

Some water trickles down small cracks and channels

gathering in pools before flowing again.

Some water seems to jump

from tumbling drop to tumbling drop

churning white;

chaotic.

All the water rejoins the river

at the foot of the outcrop.

Which seems like your route at the moment?

Channeled?

Trickling?

Tumbling?

A mixture of all three?

Move your focus away from the outcrop to the pool.

Remind yourself of the outcome.

The goal.

The aim.

The mission.

As sure as water runs down hill you will get there.

Do you really want to quibble on points for style?

Focus on that pool for a moment more

then do one thing that gets you nearer it

or write a task and time in your diary to do later.

Try it and see what difference it makes to you.
